Featuring Troy Delaney | Life of Dice (2027)
Grew Up in the Hood is a deeply personal and uplifting hip-hop record from Blackfoot recording artist Smoke Light's upcoming album, Life of Dice. While the title reflects the realities of growing up in challenging environments, the song carries a much greater message: no matter where you come from, what you've experienced, or what obstacles stand in your way, never lose hope.
Through powerful storytelling and emotionally driven lyricism, Smoke Light explores the inequalities people face from the very beginning of life. While some grow up surrounded by financial stability, opportunity, and the support of both parents, others are raised in poverty, experience the loss of loved ones, or grow up in single-parent households. Not everyone begins the race of life at the same starting line.
Rather than allowing those circumstances to define someone's future, the song encourages listeners to recognize their strength, appreciate the gift of life, and continue pushing forward.
One of the song's most meaningful messages is captured in the lyrics:
"If you woke up this morning, then you're blessed today. Don't be worried about yesterday."
These words remind listeners that waking up to another day is itself something to be grateful for. No matter what happened yesterday, today offers another opportunity to move forward, make different choices, and work toward a better future.
The chorus reinforces this message by encouraging listeners to be grateful for being alive while acknowledging the heartbreaking reality that many young people never get the opportunity to reach their 25th birthday.
Rather than focusing solely on hardship, Smoke Light uses these experiences to deliver a message of gratitude, perseverance, and hope.
The song also speaks directly to mothers experiencing grief, hardship, and the challenges of raising children alone:
"To that mother who lost her child feeling alone, to that mother raising her children on her own, don't ever let them break you. You're way too strong."
Through these words, Smoke Light acknowledges the tremendous emotional strength of mothers who continue moving forward despite loss, adversity, and overwhelming responsibility. The lyrics serve as a reminder that their sacrifices, struggles, and resilience do not go unnoticed.
One of the most distinctive elements of Grew Up in the Hood is its powerful fusion of Indigenous vocals, Blackfoot cultural identity, and contemporary hip-hop.
The record features Troy Delaney, a fellow member of the Blackfoot Confederacy, whose Indigenous vocal performance brings an additional layer of cultural expression, emotion, and depth to the song.
By combining Troy Delaney's vocals with modern hip-hop production and Smoke Light's personal storytelling, the collaboration creates a distinctive musical experience that bridges cultural traditions with contemporary sound.
This artistic partnership represents more than musical creativity. It demonstrates how Indigenous artists can bring their identities, voices, and cultural expression into modern music while honouring where they come from.
As a Blackfoot artist with roots in the Kainai and Siksika Nations, Smoke Light believes in using music to uplift Indigenous communities, celebrate cultural identity, and inspire future generations.
A Message Bigger Than the Music
At its heart, Grew Up in the Hood is not about glorifying poverty, hardship, or the struggles of growing up in difficult circumstances.
It's about overcoming them.
It's about understanding that not everyone is given the same opportunities in life, but that our beginnings do not have to determine our endings.
It's about appreciating the gift of another day, honouring those who are no longer with us, recognizing the strength of those who continue to struggle, and reminding people that their lives have value.
Through this record, Smoke Light hopes to reach young people, parents, families, and individuals who may feel discouraged by the circumstances they've experienced.
The message is simple but powerful: Never give up on yourself. Never lose hope. And never allow the circumstances you were born into to determine how far you can go.
Grew Up in the Hood represents the deeper artistic vision behind Life of Dice: turning difficult life experiences into lessons, using music as a vehicle for healing, and encouraging others to recognize their own strength.
Because where you come from is part of your story, but it doesn't have to determine where your story ends.
